Duffy's shyness almost stopped her becoming a singer.

The Welsh songstress - who picked up the Best Pop Vocal Album prize for her debut LP 'Rockferry' at this month's Grammy Awards - nearly chose swimming over singing because of her nerves.

She said: "As a kid, I never wanted to be a singer - I was far too shy - but I needed a way of externalising my thoughts because I was always talking s**t. I used to be a good swimmer but I got picked on in the pool."

Duffy ruined the dress she was planning to wear to the BRIT Awards.

The Welsh songstress - who is nominated in four categories, including Best British Single and Best Female Solo Artist - was horrified when she accidentally ripped the glamorous gown.

She said: "It was a nightmare. I thought I had my dress sorted but I ripped it trying to squeeze into it.

"Only kidding - it actually ripped when it got stuck in the zip of my bag so now I'm back to square one."

Duffy says her success is "weird".

The 'Mercy' singer, whose debut record 'Rockferry' was the biggest selling album in the UK in 2008, admits achieving worldwide fame has come as a surprise.

She said: "If I sat and thought about everything, I'd probably lose my mind. So I just go, 'That's weird, isn't it?' You've just got to get on with it - don't give yourself a chance to dwell."

Duffy hasn't made any money since she started singing.

The 'Mercy' singer - who is proving a hit in both the UK and US - admits she hasn't seen any of her earnings yet, but isn't worried about her lack of funds.

She said: "I haven't had any money yet! I think it's something to do with royalties. But at least I have enough money to buy a pair of tights now!
