Primal Scream were the big winners at last night's (18.09.08) Vodafone Music Live awards, taking home two honours.

The Scottish rockers picked up Best Live Act and Outstanding Contribution to Music - presented to them by The Clash rocker Mick Jones - at the London ceremony, which was hosted by British TV presenter Steve Jones and singer-and-actress Juliette Lewis.

Primal Scream bassist Mani joked: "These awards are handy for keeping doors open in the house. They also look better than garden gnomes so I have a few of them strategically placed around the garden.

"We're the best live band in the Britain, so we deserve it."

The band closed the ceremony with a three-song set, culminating in an explosive version of 'Rocks'.

Other performers on the night included Pussycat Dolls, Will Young - who treated the crowd to a rendition of his new single 'Changes' - rising Scottish stars Glasvegas and XFM Live Breakthrough Act winners The Ting Tings.

Despite cancelling a string of North American dates, the Spice Girls picked up Best Live Return, beating off stiff competition from veteran rockers Led Zeppelin, The Verve and James.

Emma Bunton, the only member of the girl group in attendance, told the crowd at Brixton Academy she was a "bit shocked" the band had triumphed.

She added: "We had a great time in the Spice Girls so I just feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to do it again."

Other winners on the night included Mark Ronson, who was named Best Live Male, beating Dizzee Rascal, Morrissey and Paul Weller.

Kate Nash pipped Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Estelle to take the Best Live Female honour.

Kings of Leon were crowned Best International Live Act, while Take That picked up Tour of the Year for their 'Beautiful World' run of arena shows.

Scotland's T in the Park picked up Best Festival, in a year which saw The Verve, REM and Rage Against The Machine headline the annual event.
