Dev Patel laughs off engagement

Dev Patel says he and girlfriend Freida Pinto laugh when they hear rumours they are engaged.

The 'Slumdog Millionaire' stars have been dating since they met on the set of the Oscar-winning movie in 2008, but 20-year-old Dev insists they have no intention of marrying yet.

He said: "We always laugh about these things. The last rumours I heard was that me and Frieda were looking for a wedding cake in Los Angeles. Then we were going to fly it down to India to have our wedding there."

But one person who does believe the speculation is Dev's mother Anita, who constantly calls him to check if the wedding rumours are true.

He explained: "It is weird now because every day when I am filming I get a call from mum, and she says, 'So I hear you are getting engaged now?' "

Dev also revealed the couple tried to keep their relationship a secret in the beginning in case people thought it was a publicity stunt.

He said: "The talk was all about the film at that time and we weren't going to come out as some kind of product. We weren't doing it for marketing. If we could we would probably have kept it totally under wraps.

He continued: "But there comes a point when you get more attention from the, 'Are they aren't they?' debate. So we figured, 'That's alright, everyone knows now.' "

Since going public with their love, Dev admits people are less interested in his relationship with Freida, 25.

He said: "Once we did come out the attention died down and that is great."

And he added that despite filming on different locations the couple "make time for each other."
