He was, of course, an icon of our times, but throughout the history of media there have been celebrities who created a sense of longing for us. Whether they died of natural or decidedly unnatural causes, these are six celebrities we’ve certainly missed.

James Dean
Good looking boy takes turn too fast. Dies and girls everywhere mourn. It sounds like a tragic movie – in fact it could have been one of his own movies. James Dean was only 24 when he died, but he left us as the icon of an entire decade. Three movies in only a year cemented his talent, while his casual nature and his rebel attitude still resonate today.

Marilyn Monroe
Found dead with mysterious circumstances, Marilyn Monroe is a tragic figure. A woman blessed with beauty, intrigue and a youthful innocence, she had a troubled life led behind the scenes. The young starlet was only thirty-six when she was found dead in her home. Previous instances with her alleged addiction to sleeping pills have led to many rumors of suicide.

Elvis Presley
Easily one of the most famous entertainers of all time, Elvis was known the world-over by his first name throughout most of his career. Sexy, friendly, endearing and charismatic, Elvis charmed everyone he met. The entertainer allegedly became addicted to pills and was found dead in his home in 1977. He was 42 at the time and had the unfortunate luck to die in his bathroom.

Martin Luther King
A civil rights leader who led the world into discussions and eventual change to civil right’s legislation. Martin Luther King inspired a generation of people of all skin colors and continues to inspire us today to see past color and heritage into the heart of individuals. Martin Luther King was assassinated at the age of 39 while standing on a hotel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee.

Michael Jackson
Just as Elvis ushered in a new kind of music, Michael Jackson made it possible for entertainers of every color and creed to dream of stardom. Famous for his unusual personality as much as his powerful entertainment abilities, Michael Jackson became a legend by the time he was thirty and was gone under mysterious circumstances by the time he was 51.

John Lennon
A proponent for peace and the artist behind some of the most powerful music of a decade, John Lennon partnered with Paul McCartney to write songs. His humor, his spirituality and his activist nature made him famous, but it was his death that struck a chord in hearts around the world. John Lennon was shot in the back four times by a stalker.
