Shia LaBeouf has opened up about his traumatic childhood.

The 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' star grew up in a part of Los Angeles which was rife with gang crime, and witnessed violence first-hand during the race riots in 1992.

He said: "I saw people get stabbed across the street in the park on a daily basis."

The 21-year-old actor also revealed his home life was also fraught because his father was a drug dealer and addict.

LaBeouf said: "I didn't get a lot of time with my father. I didn't really know him until I started working on my Disney show 'Even Stevens', and that was because I was paying him to be my parent on set."

The pair have never had an intimate or close relationship, leaving LaBeouf wondering how much his father cared about him.

He added: "There's a scene in a film I did where my character says, 'Did you ever love me?' These were questions I'd asked my father many times."
