Sam Raimi is disgusted by his films.

The movie director - whose latest horror film 'Drag Me to Hell' stars Alison Lohman, Lorna Raver and Justin Long - is appalled by the extreme effects needed to keep the audience entertained these days.

He said: "Alison Lohman swallowed a lot of fluids on this movie. It's disgusting what the audience wants nowadays. It's really sad. I am ashamed and embarrassed by the crowd these days."

The 49-year-old director - who is also behind the 'Spider-Man' trilogy - insists that nothing about the film industry is glamorous.

He explained: "I almost died of cold making 'The Evil Dead'. My hands were covered in Karo syrup, which I used for the pus and blood effects, I was freezing and I couldn't even load the film. It was a nightmare."

Despite his cinematic achievements, Sam says he still gets a thrill from watching the latest horror films at the movies with the general public.

He said: "I want to be able to hear them gasping loudly. My favourite part of horror movies is screaming together and laughing together."

'Drag Me to Hell' - which is about a female banker placed under a curse by an elderly Slavic woman - is due for release on May 27.
