Philip Seymour Hoffman's fame hate

Philip Seymour Hoffman says fame is "like losing your left arm".

The 41-year-old actor doesn't enjoy being a celebrity and feels especially uncomfortable when he is recognised in public.

Hoffman - who won the Best Actor Oscar in 2005 for his performance in 'Capote' - said: "You don't ever think you'll be famous but all of a sudden you're 29 and someone stares at you in a restaurant and you think they don't like you or want to fight you or you know them and you forgot their name.

"Then you realise they saw your movie and they know you. And that's shocking. It's like losing your left arm."

The actor, who has long been rumoured to be playing super villain The Penguin in the next Batman movie, also revealed he finds it "unbearable" watching his early films.

He added to Britain's Independent newspaper: "If 'Scent of a Woman' is on TV or something and I come across it, it's unbearable. It makes you want to weep. You're like, 'Yeah, I was young.' "
