Nicole Kidman's Theron wife

Nicole Kidman is set to play a transsexual in a new film.

The actress is to star in and produce 'The Danish Girl', based on a true story about the world's first post-op transsexual, opposite Charlize Theron, who will play her wife.

The film follows Danish artists Einar and Greta Wegener who found success after Einar stood in for a female model that Greta was set to paint. As their work gained popularity, Greta encouraged her husband to continue to adopt a female guise.

This eventually led to Einar undergoing a sex change operation in 1931, shocking the world and threatening their marriage.

Anand Turker is set to direct the film, which screenwriter Lucinda Coxon is adapting from David Ebershoff's novel of the same name.

Both Nicole and Charlize have previously won Oscars for playing lesbians, in 'The Hours' and 'Monster' respectively.

Meanwhile, Nicole's new film 'Australia' has been rewritten after test audiences found the ending too sad.

Director Baz Luhrmann agreed to alter the script after "intense" discussions with 20th Century Fox after it was deemed unnecessary for Hugh Jackman, who plays Nicole's lover in the film, to die in the final scenes.

The decision has angered some Australian film fans.

One wrote on Australia's Sunday Telegraph's website: "Baz clearly has no control of his film, or no ethics when it comes to putting the story he wanted to tell to the screen."
